Not much going on here this weekend. It'd be hard to top last weekend.

I didn't fill the form out. One of the idiots says it isn't meant to single out people who aren't satisfied with them but I don't believe him. (There are a lot of immigrants in my apt bldg. Is this form being sent to ICE? If I were in their shoes I wouldn't fill it out. I'm for sure not going to snitch on them!) On top of being idiots I think they're crooks too, there was something missing from my apt. Bizarrely enough it was a package of partly eaten smoked salmon that was in my fridge 3 days ago. Why anybody would steal that I haven't the slightest. Nothing else seems to be missing. Problem is I can't prove anything.

I have absolutely no idea what to do here. They're doing a party and raffle for the residents but the Fuckup Squad insists that everybody fill out some form rating them to participate. (The forms are NOT anonymous.) I think I have just as much of a right to free food and a chance at a $50 gift card as anybody else living here but if I let them know how incompetent I think they are they'll use some excuse to kick me out. If I lie on the form it'll only encourage them to keep fucking up (and I don't feel right about lying anyway, even to people I don't like.) If I don't fill the form out they are going to want to know why. (Even if I didn't have a problem with lying, I don't think I could make up a convincing one to explain why I didn't want to fill out the form anyway.)

A spooky thing, for the upcoming season:

Ever since we moved in, I have heard noises at night. I told Blair about it the first time, and many times after, but she never hears it. They are the unmistakable sounds of someone running back and forth down the hall of our floor, and every so often I will hear banging too, like someone is pounding on a door somewhere. Whenever I hear it, I'll hurry over to the front door and look through the peephole. Then when I can't see anyone through that, I'll crack the door and look out into the hall. There's never anyone there.

Pause.

Yesterday, lots of things happened in our building.

When I opened the door to take the dog out, there was a tall woman standing there in the hall, looking completely off her face. She wore a tiny tank top and short short boxer briefs. They were inside-out. I muttered the thing I always mutter when I encounter someone unexpectedly: "Oh, sorry." She stared at me. Grunted. Turned and staggered toward the door to the stairwell.

Once we were outside and I was trying to let the dog pee, I noticed a man come out one of the doors. A very sketchy man, carrying a beat up plastic yellow bag. He walked across the street to a half-built garage, did something over there. Then he crossed back diagonally toward the dumpsters in our parking lot, and did something over there, too. I steered the dog back over toward the grass. I heard footsteps, and thought he was following me, but he disappeared back into the building. All the people I have told are pretty certain his sketchy behavior was drug-related. La Crosse is famous for alcoholism being a religion, and its impressive number of meth users. Drug use is so bad in this area that there is Narcan on the wall in businesses next to the fire extinguisher and the AED.

Anyway. Later, when Blair and I took the dog out again, as we were coming in, we encounter a woman screaming in the lobby. She's getting in the elevator, and one of our neighbors is trying to talk to her. "I do NOT need your help!" she's screaming. "You didn't want to help me before! Your help is worthless to me!" The floor? Covered in blood. I didn't immediately know where she was bleeding from, but apparently she had a massive gash on her foot/lower leg. Like the elevator looked like someone was murdered in it. There were trails of blood all over the floor, tracked across the lobby.

We, and several other neighbors we have gotten to know, all gathered for a huddle there in the lobby. One of the ladies knew who that woman was. We had the story from the neighbor she had screamed at. We wondered what we should do: we couldn't just leave blood everywhere like that. What an incredible biohazard! It was decided that one of us would call the non-emergency police number, so one of the guys did, while someone else tried to get ahold of the building manager and the maintenance guy, and the rest of us talked about it and also stood guard by the garage to warn everyone who came in that there was blood everywhere and to be careful.

A police officer showed up. He spoke to me, to Blair. He spoke to the guy who called, and to the woman who knew the woman we called out. The trail of blood led straight to her unit, but the woman would not open her door for the police officer. I was up there on our floor (of course this spazz of a woman lives on our floor) because I was bringing the dog back up.

Back downstairs, we were discussing what we knew about the woman. Apparently she has been spotted around the building high as shit, and had just gotten out of prison recently. Conversation turned toward the building itself. It's brand new. It opened in May of this year, just a few months before we moved in. Like, it's brand new. But apparently, someone has already died here. That wasn't enough to bother me, really, but the rest of the story really had me intrigued.

Resume.

This person died on our floor, of an overdose. Before he died, he was heard for some time running back and forth down the hall, looking for help. He would pound on random doors, except no one would open up for him.

A very eerie coincidence, I'm sure.

Still, every night I listen for the running and the knocking noises, and every night I hurry to the door and try to catch whoever it is, but I never spot anybody.

Wednesday What I'm...

Wed, Sep. 17th, 2025 03:52 pm
Reading
  • I finished A Death in Door County by Annelise Ryan. Very enjoyable! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series soon.
  • I read a bit more of My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter by Aja Monet. There've been a few poems that really caught my attention, which is nice since I'm mostly pretty meh on it.
  • I read Craftfulness: Mend Yourself by Making Things by Rosemary Davidson and Arzu Tahsin. It had some interesting quotes in it, but wasn't particularly insightful or deep imo.
  • I started listening to Thrawn: Treason by Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Thrawn #3). Very excited to be getting more Eli since he wasn't in the second book at all!
  • I started reading The Entanglement of Rival Wizards by Sara Raasch (Magic and Romance #1). Haven't gotten very far, but I've been hearing a lot of good things about it. Including from when I saw Sara at a bookstore event on Friday!
  • Ficwise, I've been cycling through a few ships for KinnPorsche. The VegasPete series I've been reading had a side story for ArmTae and I was immediately obsessed. Like, read through most of the (admittedly small) tag obsessed lol Right now I'm reading Want and Need by [archiveofourown.org profile] bisexualbard , the first fic in a post canon KimChay series.
Watching
  • The roommate and I finished Perfect 10 Liners. So good! Perfect amount of angst and drama surrounded by a ton of friendships and family dynamics and sweet romances. Once again, big cast college drama is where it's at for me lol
  • We watched the latest episode of Revamp the Undead Story with the best friend. Oh the lovely, lovely drama is really going now!
  • The best friend was watching We Are but stalling out on the last few episodes because of time/work, so we watched the end of it with her. Still love those boys <3
  • We also started watching a new show with the best friend, Dead Friend Forever - DFF. It's much more of a thriller than a romance, but I'm enjoying it so far. Very Until Dawn vibes.
  • AEW on Wednesday, but the roommate and I decided to skip out on Collision. We're kind of getting to the point where we're not that interested in watching because our favorites are not there or not doing much.
Listening
  • Still T-pop! This week I've primarily been listening to more of LYKN and Jeff Satur.
  • Also listened to Phuwin's new song, All In.
Writing
  • Nothing :/

I had to switch painkillers because I ran out and I went to the drugstore to get more and they didn't have any ibuprofen except for the kind you give to babies so I bought a bigass bottle of a different kind and so far they seem to be working better. Also I'm going to PT this afternoon and I have to remember to schedule more appointments because they won't let me schedule two months' worth of appointments at a time like they used to. My friend was going to come over today to go swimming but that got postponed till tomorrow. I also have to take a break from trying to get ahold of L., I have a feeling they're really feeling burned out from work.

One at a Time?

Tue, Sep. 16th, 2025 11:38 am
In the past year or so I've been trying to limit myself to working on only one multichapter fic at a time. I have 3 going right now, actually. The order I wanted to go in for working on them is Our Time Together, Dead of Night, and then Getting a Scar Out of It. I love all of them, but they definitely all have very different tones.

I'm nearing the end of Our Time Together, but have been getting a lot of comments on Dead of Night. People really like that one! I downloaded it to maybe reread what I have and get back to work on it, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. I feel like my WIPs are more likely to get finished if I do what I've been doing by limiting myself to one at a time.

Though I do feel rather stuck on chapter 19 of Our Time Together...

Just thinking out loud! I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts though!

I just finished the first (and currently only) season of The Paper, which is sort of a sequel to The Office, and I enjoyed it! Maybe it took a few episodes for me to really get into it, but I ended up really liking the characters.

I also finished reading Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho, which I can highly recommend as something that sort of blends magical stories with Bridgerton era England.

Had a DnD session tonight and I took a slightly more active role than in the average session, which always makes me feel a little nervous, but it was great.

Blair is feeling a little under the weather. Or was, I guess, as she's feeling a lot better today. I went with her to get her hair cut, and while we were out, we also had lunch, poked around in a crystal shop, and did the grocery shopping.

She's going away this weekend for a mandatory class field trip, where her mycology class is traveling all the way to the University of Notre Dame, (like five hours away) from Friday morning until Sunday night to forage for mushrooms and then study them in the research laboratory. I'm not sure why they have to travel so far to do that, as there are tons of mushrooms right here in La Crosse, and she has a whole tackle box full of like fifteen different varieties to prove it, but whatever. I'll miss her while she's gone and I'll be worried the entire time. They're carpooling (I can't vouch for how her classmates or professors drive) and staying in research dorms (I don't trust other people) and she likely won't have all that much time to check in and let me know how they're getting on.

I will have to distract myself this weekend, which means hey, maybe I'll actually get a little writing done for the first time in what feels like a year.

Feeling a little nervous. I didn't get much sleep last night because I was scared, there was some pissed off wingnut screaming in the courtyard of my apt bldg. A long time ago we used to have security guards here at night. I wish we still did.

Wednesday What I'm...

Wed, Sep. 10th, 2025 08:45 pm
Reading
  • I finished River Monsters by Jeremy Wade. Very enjoyable book! Would love to read more from him.
  • I started reading A Death in Door County by Annelise Ryan (Monster Hunter #1), which is a mystery series about a cryptozoologist. Pretty fun and it was fun to see the author obviously did a lot of research about Lake Michigan and such.
  • I started reading My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter by Aja Monet, a poetry book that's the current pick for the DEI book club I'm in at work. Don't love the poetry style, but it's ok.
  • Ficwise, I'm still primarily reading VegasPete, but I did read several Sterek fics this week too. Currently reading part 8 of the Love & Blood series by [archiveofourown.org profile] raelle , which I was on the first fic of last week.
Watching
  • The roommate and I finished The Eclipse. I can't say I really enjoyed it? Like it wasn't a bad show! But the angst and homophobia was not what I was looking for tbh.
  • The roommate and I started Perfect 10 Liners and we are loving it! I really dig the big big cast college dramas and there are just so many good actors and pairs :)
  • We watched the latest episode of Revamp the Undead Story with the best friend. Stuff's starting to get really good!
  • Saturday, our internet was out, so the roommate and I picked back up on Teen Wolf since she has the DVDs. I think we made it about halfway through.
  • AEW not quite as usual bc our internet was out. Still gotta catch up on Collision, but idk when that's gonna happen.
Listening
  • Still on t-pop. I've started making my own playlist of faves, particularly with songs from the dramas we've seen.
Writing
  • I wrote some poetry.
  • Also wrote a fill for [community profile] comment_fic .

I had a wonderful afternoon, I had veggie pizza and wine with a couple of friends for lunch while we listened to live bluegrass, then we went shopping for fancy cheese and baked goodies and other things and then we got cupcakes at my favorite cupcake place.

Things are chugging along. I wish I visited DW as much as I used to, but I'm just kept so damn busy these days.

I'm settling slowly into my new job, which I enjoy. The work is the same as it's always been, it's just a new cast of people, a new environment, and a new boss who is very needy and very fixated on getting every last massage covered when someone calls in sick or something, so he is always pestering me.

The weather switched from hot to cold on September 1st like someone flipped a switch, which is pretty cool and not at all what I'm used to. It feels like autumn and we've already picked up a few Halloweenish things to decorate the apartment with.

I wish I had more to talk about. I wish I could kickstart my creativity so that I could write something. Most of all, I wish I could finally feel like I've settled into a relaxed routine so that I can just. Do the things I used to do! Hopefully soon.

One thing that hasn't changed is that I've been keeping up with fun foods to try. Y'all know I love to try limited edition fun flavors of things. I tried the Reese's Oreos and the Oreo Reese's (reminiscent to the team-up Oreo did with Coke, when they released Coke flavored Oreos and Oreo flavored Coke). I also found the new(ish) ice cream sundae flavored A&W cream soda. It takes like chocolate fudge and vanilla ice cream, it's really good! I've also picked up the limited Baconator Cheez-its. Mm-mm.
